US Navy wants to make faster ships. Thrusting for it, the US Navy plans to develop an electronics system that will be able to reduce the size and weight of a warship’s motors sharply. To move forward successfully with the plan, the US Navy has joined hands with a New York company and the University at Albany’s College of Nanoscale Science and Engineering.
The multimillion-dollar project will build cooler electronics systems cryogenically. The system will eventually help reduce not only the size, but also the weight of power generators. Power generators are needed aboard the ships to make the vessels more maneuverable and reliable.
Donald Gubser, a scientist at the federal Naval Research Laboratory said,
In going to the all-electric ship, it is absolutely essential to have high power density motors to drive the ship... They need six times more than what is needed in a commercial liner. These are power-hungry machines.
