A new study has brought good new for patients with HIV. During the course of this study, researchers found that taking daily selenium supplements was helpful in increasing the level of essential minerals in the blood and at the same time, it was found helpful in suppressing the progression of viral load in patients with HIV infection.
Researchers are very enthusiastic with the advancement they have recorded in antiretroviral therapy (ART). Besides, it has provided patients with HIV a longer life expectancy. But researchers are not very sure that how this system works. Therefore, they don’t deny the need of further study in this regard. Expressing similar belief the author writes:
The exact mechanism by which selenium exerts its effects on HIV-1 viral replication is not known, although the literature suggests several possibilities.
However, darker side of the story can also not be spurned away according to which in order to keep HIV viral counts low, strict adherence to the therapy is required but unfortunately, it may lead to toxic effects and metabolic dysfunction.
Deploring on the negative aspect of this therapy the author writes:
Thus, complete control of HIV over time using ART is unlikely and pharmacotherapeutic limitations leave a significant void in the treatment arsenal.
This significant study would definitely enable patients with HIV/AIDS to have a sigh of relief.
