rice-sized chip to help doctors retrieve patients' medical records

With the world of medicine witnessing the amazing magic of science, Horizon Blue Cross and Blue Shield of New Jersey executes an innovative new test program, in which it plans to implant patients who are suffering from chronic diseases with a rice-sized microchip.

The rice-sized chip is implanted in a patient’s right arm above the elbow. The chip will help personnel in the emergency room retrieve the medical record of a patient, even who is unable to communicate. Thus, with it a doctor can avoid costly or serious medical errors like duplicating medical tests, dangerous drug interactions and bad diagnoses. It can then be easily detected using equipment at the hospital.

Horizon is teaming up with Hackensack University Medical Center in a pilot program, where 280 patients — treated regularly at the hospital — will be implanted with a chip that contains a code.
