genetically-modified-hens_64How would you like the idea if I say that now cancer fighting drugs would not be made in factories but in the poultry farms. Sounds strange, but it’s true. Actually, due to tireless efforts of the British scientists a flock of genetically modified designer hens has tumbled out, which these researchers claim, would lay eggs capable of producing drugs that fight cancer and many other life-threatening diseases.

As we know that currently used methods to produce protein drugs, such as monoclonal antibodies for treating diseases like cancer and arthritis are quite expensive and time-consuming as well, however, the advent of genetically modified drugs have given a new ray of hope. Now, researchers would be able to produce cancer-fighting drugs that would be more effective as well as cheaper than the existing ones.

I think still it would be too early to give an opinion on this study. However, the way that has been carved out to fight cancer is quite interesting. This conversion of chickens into ‘bioreactors’ is a major breakthrough and might help researchers fight Parkinson’s disease, diabetes and other various diseases.
