New Machine Promises Better Images of the HeartImaging cross-sectional slices of the heart, the computed tomography machines work by sending X-rays around a patient. The image details improve with the increase in the number of slices.

Compared to the current 64-slice machine, a new imager recording 256 slices is expected to be much more effective. The new scanner is actually a follow up the 64-slice CT machine. It is used in conjunction with an injected dye or contrast agent and can detect heart defects and coronary artery disease potentially in a single test. It also takes a really less time — less than half a second, compared to a fraction of the radiation dose needed by the traditional ones, the developers claim.

This technology, thus, could help reduce healthcare costs — by potentially eliminating batteries of unneeded tests in certain cases, Richard T. Mather a researcher at Toshiba America Medical Systems said.
