A new laser-trap technology capable of simulating white blood cells’ suspension has been developed by Japanese scientists. With it, a researcher can trap and hold cells or beads at a focal point — forming a trap at it — created by the laser through a high numerical aperture.

The laser traps controlled by a joystick, gain insights on how white blood cells engulf bacteria! This is important, as it is a crucial part of the body`s defense against infection.

All credits go to Hiroshi Kubo and his colleagues at the Tohoku University School of Medicine. They used the technology for replacing previous techniques that used white blood cells stuck to a surface, or adherent cells.
