After starting the umbilical cord business in 1989, Cryo-Cell International has formed a menstrual blood bank. In recent years, researches have shown that stem cells, especially the embryonic stem cells can be effective immune system boosters useful in fighting non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma, leukemia, sickle cell disease, anemia and other diseases.
Their effect is currently being studied for fighting heart diseases and neurological disorders, such as Parkinson’s disease. Cryo-Cell recently funded research that found menstrual blood to be rich source of stem cells.
The menstrual blood bank named C’Elle will store menstrual blood of women who may obtain an at-home collection kit online at www.celle.com. The cost to store blood will include an initial fee of $499, which covers the first year of storage. For subsequent years, storage cost would be $99 per year.
Not everyone is convinced with Cryo-Cell’s unique idea. Doctors say that it is too early to arrive at any conclusions about the effectiveness of menstrual blood. The company acknowledged that they have not used C’Elle stem cells in human trials but have found encouraging results in laboratory studies.
