Japanese are good at their technology and keeping with their tradition, Japanese scientists have gone ahead and created a simple enzyme based bio fuel cell and the cell uses enzymes for catalyzing oxidation of D-fructose and reduction of dioxygen for generation of electricity. The oxidization of fuel by one enzyme occurs at the anode and dioxygen is reduced by electrons through another enzyme at the cathode.
This technique has done away with mediators and will lead to the simplification of bio fuel cells and hence can also operate under mild conditions. It is also expected that one bio fuel cell might also be developed as power sources of implantable devices in humans too such as sensors, pacemakers and insulin pumps.
It is being regarded as an important development and in the future expect development such as refinements of electrodes too.
