If researchers across the world are trying to zero in to the solution of the common breast cancer-causing gene’s mutation, then they have to widen their horizon of research to ‘many genes’.

Yes, it is not just a single gene that raises breast cancer risk in 60 percent of the U.S. women – but 5 in total!

According to researches by several teams, there are four other genes, which can significantly raise the risk of breast cancer. Importantly, it is found that more than 60 percent of the women in the United States probably carry at least one of the mutations in one of the genes — called FGFR2.

Jianjun Liu of the Genome Institute of Singapore said,

This is a truly landmark breakthrough for breast cancer research, because these genes are the first confirmed common genetic risk factors for breast cancer.

Even if they don’t inherit breast cancer from your relatives, after menopause, many women suffering from four common mutations in FGFR2 can fall victim to breast cancer.

Thus, this discovery has increased the researchers’ arena of dealing with breast cancer gene mutations.
