It is predicted that 1 in 10 women will now develop breast cancer. True, highly efficient scanning techniques, such as mammography exist. But, many women are uncomfortable with it, and tend to avoid or delay going for detection.

To find a solution to this, scientists in the US have developed the first hand-held optical scanner, for early detection of breast cancer. The device is portable, and both patients and doctors could use it, as it is easily accessible and can be used personally.

The device, the scientists hope, could be available commercially within the next few years. It is made by Britton Chance of the University of Pennsylvania and colleagues.
