the European-made SMART-1 solar-powered satellite is seen nearing the Moon on its way to make the first comprehensive inventory of key chemical elements in the lunar surface

The three-year voyage is just about to end! Europe’s first mission to the moon - the European Space Agency’s SMART-1 - will crash-land in a cloud of dust and rock early Sunday.

The voyage has gathered data about the lunar surface. It also tested a new engine intended to propel future spacecraft to Mercury and other planets!

The space scientists and the astronomers are curiously and anxiously waiting for the SMART-1 hitting its target on a volcanic plain called the Lake of Excellence at 1:41 a.m. EDT. It is orbiting lower and lower as it makes its final approach at 4,475 mph.
