Newly FDA-approved device has been found quite effective in restoring healthy vision, left impaired after stroke. Researchers put this interesting finding forward at the American Stroke Association’s International Stroke Conference 2007.
Before summing up this conclusion, researchers tracked some stroke survivors. The average patient age was 58.7 years old and interestingly, the patients were seen about 3 years after a stroke or other brain injury causing impaired vision. These patients underwent Vision Restoration Therapy twice a day, six days a week, in 30-minute sessions, fixating on a screen that delivered light stimulation.
Finally, results that came to surface were quite enthusiastic since there was an average change of 4.9
degrees in the vision, which clearly shows that results, leaping out of this study were quite satisfactory. Harping upon this significance Dr. Jose G. Romano said:
An improvement of 5 degrees can be very significant...For instance, we read with only the central 5 degrees of vision.
These results definitely bring in a ray of hope for stroke victims who normally sustain blurred vision. However, one thing still remains unanswered that is this device prolific only for stroke victims or also for normal patients with vision loss.
