Good news for cancer patients!! A bacterium protecting sea life has been found out to contain cancer fighting properties. Researchers of the Oregon Health & Science University state that a gene cluster has been discovered from a bacterium which has been found to protect marine invertebrate could be the first step towards engineering cancer fighting drugs.
Endobugula sertula which is the bacterium tends to secrete a bioactive molecule called bryostatin which has been found out to confuse cancer cell lines. Bryostatin has been found out to contain anti cancer properties and can also act against leukemia, renal cancer and melanoma. Though it’s anti cancer properties were known but up till now it was not possible to produce it in large quantities for pharmaceutical development. A team of researchers have now developed a method which could lead to the commercial production of byrostatins in the future. Good luck to the team so that they can quickly commercialize the technique and hence end cancer from this world.
