People suffering from sever burn injuries know very well that skin grafting is not enough to heal the skin. Even in case of skin grafting it might be difficult as the patient might not have healthy skin or burn might be too deep. In order to overcome these problems Francois Berthiaume at the Harvard Medical School has created an artificial skin which can result in faster healing and improve the quality of life. In this case he used stem cells for improving the resistance of artificial skin to infection and scars. He stated that stem cells could prove beneficial in regeneration of tissues in a quick manner without leading to any scare.
In case of sever burns using stem cells could be difficult therefore stem cells were drawn circulating in the blood of the patient to the wound with a growth factor which attracts stem cells and here better wound healing was reported. This could lead to faster healing and improved quality of life for hundreds of burn patients.
