Very soon you will be able to communicate to your dear ones sitting inside a moving flight. The satellite-based technology, providing this facility will allow UK airline BMI to begin trails on making in-flight mobile calls. The costs of the calls are expected to be around $2.50 per minute. You can also send text messages on board its aircraft. Thanks to the technology developed by OnAir.
A joint venture between Airbus and airline industry IT body Sita has given birth to this ground-breaking technology. The technology will be used in trials with Air France and Portugal’s TAP, early in 2007.
With Inmarsat providing the satellite communications, the on-board equipment incorporates the technology from Tenzing. It is the company that pioneered in-flight email. The ground network infrastructure will be provided by Monaco Telecom. And it will be handling all GSM and GPRS calls made from the in-flight mobile services of OnAir.
